Science / STEM week

Dear Parents, We are extending our celebration of all things Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths related (STEM) to cover the two weeks beginning the 9th and 16th off November. The theme is “Design your Future” and is based on encouraging children into careers related to STEM. Females are significantly underrepresented in the STEM related industries, and we’d like to encourage our girls to break that mould. We are encouraging as many parents as possible to help us encourage our bright young minds, and dissolve the perception that scientists are confined to a lab, or engineering and technology are for boys.
This week 5th and 6th Class will be partaking in a Guinness World record attempt at the largest Science and Maths lesson, and next week 3rd and 4th will attempt take part in their own World Record attempt!
We hope to organise visits to several business centres in Dublin that are organising events for Science Week and invite all school family members in to help bring to life the many exciting possibilities of a future in the Sciences. If you (or your brother, or sister or parent or employer!) have a background in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths and would like to enthuse the next generation of great problem solvers and inventors, please let me know!. In the past we’ve had mechanics, scientists, mathematicians, nutritionists, engineers, nurses, doctors and technicians come in to inspire the pupils. I will forward your suggestions and offers to Ms Toner who is co-ordinating our efforts with other teachers in the school!
